Iron Helmet, the developers behind the critically acclaimed Neptune’s Pride, are close to releasing their second zombie online filled title; Blight of the Immortals. As good as Neptune’s Pride was, the main gripe with the players was the amount and imbalance towards player’s back-stabbing each other. Iron Helmet has changed their angle this time, and Blight of the Immortals relies heavily on teamwork. In fact, it’s almost impossible without it. There is still competition between players, but it is much less exaggerated.
The game features many fantasy creatures such as Orcs and Elves, beset by a terrible blight. They are not yet dead, but they move up the countryside pillaging, eating everything it sees and growing in numbers… basically a zombie invasion. Players defend their cities and prevent the invasion. Players will need to grow their armies through trade, or through conquest. The majority of the cities are uncontrolled Independent Cities, and you must pay them or conquer them to gain the territory. The simple strategy of trading coins with other players, setting up your little towns by upgrading defences and economic power and aligning your armies is really engaging. However, there is one huge gripe.
One of the first things you notice when playing this game is the pace of the game. The game play is painstakingly slow, but this is one of the things that Iron Helmet prides itself on. “For people who don’t have time to play games for hours on end. Just log in a few minutes each day to build your cities and command your armies. Check back hours later to watch your empire expand and grow!” it claims on their website. Sure, but how about for those who do have more than a few minutes? When it takes a game literally hours for an army to reach the next town, it all gets dull, and fast. Those who do indeed only want to play a few minutes a day will find the game incredibly fun and engaging. For others however, they may want to find a different game.
Blight of the Immortals takes place in real time. You might dispatch your forces in the morning, then check back that evening to see the results of battles and give them fresh orders. The slow paced nature of the game provides you with plenty of time to coordinate with the other players and plan your attacks. Teamwork is essential in overcoming the evil blight.
