“For eons the Crogenitors traversed the galaxy, genetically transforming and sculpting living matter to their will. In their unchecked arrogance they created something they could not control – the Darkspore. Now the galaxy is under siege.”

This is the back story of an upcoming online, sci-fi action role-playing game Darkspore, which is rich in action and fiction, and is being written and developed by some of the most talented minds in the video game industry. It is scheduled to release in February 2011.

When talking about the game, Maxis, its developer prefer to use the phrase “action-RPG with the DNA of Spore”, because “Darkspore is inspired in part by the award-winning creature editor tech of Spore” said Lucy Bradshaw, General Manager of Maxis Studio, “but also in large part from the team’s own passion for gaming and prior experience. The team has combined these inspirations to produce a unique take on the action RPG genre.” These inspirations come from many games, for example, the creature creation from Spore, the gameplay from Diablo, the “deck construction” from Magic: The Gathering, the tagteam RPG battle aspect from Pokémon, the “see what’s coming” aspect from Plants vs. Zombies and the A.I. director from Left 4 Dead.

The best parts from different games contribute much to the attractiveness of Darkspore, however, there are other features that make it fantastic.

Darkspore will feature dynamic, fast-paced action as players battle across alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore in a four-player co-operative and full single-player campaign, as well as intense multiplayer battles. In order to defeat the malicious Darkspore, players will need to Collect an arsenal of living weapons – genetic heroes with different combat abilities – and upgrade them with tens of thousands of collectible body parts and armor.

Darkspore will feature three unique classes of five different genetic hero types, with a limitless number of upgrades and customizations available through the parts players collect on each planet level. The same character types from the campaign modes are selectable and switchable in PvP battle, with some classes having tactical advantages over others. Knowing which class to utilize and unleash on opponents at all times is key, as each class switch keeps the player locked into their new class for a minimum of 15 seconds.

What’s more, Darkspore’s combat is largely based on picking the right character type to take into combat, and switching between them when the time is right. To that end, there were six characters will be most helpful: Magnos is the most well-rounded character of the bunch; Meditron used ranged attacks and healing moves; Vex utilized teleportation to maneuver in and out of perilous combat situations; Goliath is the team’s tank-like attacker, and Blitz is best for performing melee attacks.
