Vindictus is a free-to-play action-MMORPG developed by devCAT and published by Nexon. The game originally hails from Korea where it is known in Asia as Mabinogi: Heroes, and serves as a prequel to the popular Nexon MMORPG, Mabinogi. Vindictus is developed based on Valve’s Source engine and features fast paced combat, cloth physics, and the ability to weaponize objects in the environment.
Vindictus takes place in the world of Erinn, the same setting used in Mabinogi, but is placed chronologically several hundred years prior to the first game during a period of war and strife. Nexon America announced the new name on March 12, 2010 at the Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco.
In Vindictus, you’ll play as a character who belongs to a specific character class, which is currently gender-limited; for instance, the heavy melee character that uses two-handed weapons is male, while one of the game’s spellcasters is a sorceress that uses a giant scythe-like weapon. While this may sound limiting, the game will have an extensive character customization system that will let you create characters with varying skin tones, facial features, tattoos (facial, full-body, and otherwise), and scars, along with hundreds of different clothing, armor, and weapon options.
Interestingly, the game will have an ongoing armor damage system that will actually be shown on your character’s model–if you’ve been taking a pounding from a bunch of demons or skeletons or, your chain-mail suit. Even without apparel damage, many of Vindictus’ armor choices seem to be enough — for whatever reason, Nexon feels it’s important to push not only the game’s heavy character customization, but also the potential sex appeal of having young muscular characters wearing tight-fitting clothes.
In Vindictus, not only will you be able to whack your enemies senselessly with your weapons, but you’ll also be able to grapple with them, lifting them and carrying them as living shields against oncoming attacks. You can also pummel them into environmental geometry.
In addition, your character can pick up environmental debris and use it as a melee or thrown weapon–pillars, small boulders, and shattered wooden items. The Source engine’s physics can also be used to set up attacks, such as cutting down a rope bridge with enemies on it, or pulling loose a set of logs that’s restraining a boulder you can send crashing down on enemies below.
Vindictus’ interesting physics, high-quality graphics, and surprising violence definitely help it stand apart from other free-to-play games. It’s scheduled to launch later this year.
What our editor said:
Apparently a lot of people do believe in ‘afterlife’, and in order to make it into ‘Eden’ instead of ‘Hell’, they do stuffs now to pave the way. Some prey before each meal; some perform church service every Sunday; but there are always more queer traditions. Like in Vindictus, a faraway land steeped in a weighted history of war, the only way, at least to the folks there, to vie for a ticket into Paradise, is to fight! Not metaphorically speaking of course, but real head-on battling where swords are bent, blood is splashed and bodies are, alas, heaped up out there in cold.
Whether all these stinky and horrible-looking corpses lying around the town, can finally, as the Vindictus legend has it, rise into ultimate happiness, I honesty don’t know. But for all the walking souls who still slash and slay their way forward, what’s damned for sure in ‘this life’ is sheer toughness, roller-coasting thrill, unbelievable cunningness, and, needless to say, endless dog fights!
Once in Vindictus, do what the Vindicutus folks do. You gonna really have to brawl with teeth and nails even just to get by in the mundane life. This is a totally insane world where the closest thing we got to any social regime is the ‘rule of jungle’. Everybody picks up on the weaker and to keep their irony claws off, you’d better train yourself to be bulkier than the monster-like Karok, adepter wielding weapons than Lann the swordsman, crafter than Evie the wily witch, and also more charismatic than Morrighan, the spiritual leader of Vindicutus !
The moment you walk into this monster-filled fantasy world, change creeps in. The transformation-starter, well, is the way you look. No suit-up, no sports look, from now on, brassy armors, heavy gun vest and cowboy big boots are all your wardrobe is gonna be about. Throw away your Rolex and Melbourne, cause here in Vindictus, the only accessories which speak of manhood and respect would be the antiquated swords drenched with enemies’ blood!
Think you’ve be awesomely-equipped to meet up any brawlers out there? Go if you ask for an instant death! Smarter guys would hold it on a bit, figuring out for a watertight plan, checking around for great alliance, and when finally rushing out into the melee crowds, they simply make legends!
Features:
Vindictus, Nexon’s signature 3D action-paced MMORPG fantasy, carries on its innovative spirits, impeccable art designs, lavish gaming mechanics and, as nearly always the case with every previous offering, incredible appealing among the gaming populations.
A tinge of ancient mythology, a touch of rich fantasy story, a team of versatile fighters and a great many brutal combats, all give Vindictus more than one cuts far above the average.
Confident enough to slog out all monsters, robots and even your fellow players in Vindictus to sweep clean the path towards Heaven? If you’ve got it, just flaunt it!
